Ethical search engine optimization is something every SEO should use. Using black hat methods such as Keyword Stuffing, Hidden Links etc. may show results in the short term, but is a self-destructive path to take.

If you’re serious about your online business, and want to make sure you build-up a good rapport with web users and potential customers alike, ethical (or, white hat as it is also known as) is your ONLY option.

Some methods of Ethical Search Engine Optimization are:

• Link Building via Ethical means (Useful blog comments, Article marketing etc.)
• Using correct Search Engine Optimization Techniques
• Build good relationships with other webmasters (Niche specific Forums are good for this)

Some Un-Ethical Search Engine Optimization techniques are:

• Keyword Stuffing (Placing too many keywords, related or not, into your posts, html etc.)
• Automatically generated ‘Doorway’ pages
• The same content on multiple pages
• Non Relative Link Farming

Of course these aren’t the only methods but I thought that it would be enough to give you an idea of what you should avoid, and do more of.

In the long run ethical search engine optimization is by far the better choice. Using un-ethical or black hat techniques will just get you success in the short-run (if you’re lucky), but Google will find you out quickly and will punish you accordingly.

Trust me, being kicked out of the Google SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) will massively bottleneck your revenue via your online business.

In short; Ethical Search Engine Optimization is achieved through strategies and techniques deemed valid and acceptable by search engines.

Offsite Optimization

As the image shows, the very basics of Off Site Optimization are Incoming Links and the age of your domain.

Building quality, relevant backlinks is not an easy task, yet, unfortunately – a necessary one.

Trusted Sites: A trusted site is generally an aged website with plenty of traffic, frequent fresh content, what’s considered an ‘authority’ in their niche and ranks in the SERPs for many (relevant) keywords.

Domain Age: The older the domain the more ‘wiser’ it appears to be in Google’s and other SE’s eyes.  This is mainly because newer domains are put into a probation period (to check if they are spam sites, illegal and general bad sites) and have to earn the search engines trust. This generally takes a couple of years.

Another important factor of Off Site optimization is the length of time before the domain needs to be renewed. It is recommended to keep your

sites renewal date 1 year from any given date. This, yet again, is to do with the short lived spam like sites that plague the internet.

Onsite Optimization

Content, content and more content. But do remember: Quality over quantity.

Content: Make sure it is keyword rich, related to your websites niche, and has a Keyword Density of around 2% – 8%. If your Keyword Desnity (KWD from now on), is too low you won’t gain as much traffic from the search engines, and if it’s too high, your site will be flagged as spam. Outbound Links: If you have too many outbound links, or you link to ‘bad neighbourhoods’, your site will be portrayed as a link farm and therefore, rejected by search engines for being a spam site. If you need to link to another site, make sure the surrounding text and anchor text is relative to both your sites niche, and the niche of the site you’re linking to.

Post Frequency: The more frequently you post articles (content in general) to your site, the more the search engines spider your site. And the more they spider your site, the quicker you get indexed, resulting in your pages being added to the SERPs quicker then if you were to post infrequently.

If you do all this correctly you will undoubtedly see an improvement with your search engine traffic (compared to doing nothing but posting).

If your post is helpful to the reader then they are more likely to click on your websites link (then if your post is spam/useless).

Do Follow Forums

The benefits of commenting on 1 – 5 Forums ~ 10 times each per day are:

• You increase your Brand’s exposure - People are more likely to go to sources that they’ve heard of previously.
• Free Traffic – Who can complain with free, targeted traffic?
• DoFollow Backlink – Sharing the PageRank juice.
• Build relationships with other experts in your field – They can offer advice, tips, link to your site from theirs and.. whatever else.
• Increase Link Popularity – In at least Yahoo, high backlinks are an important factor with ranking  in high in the SERPs.

Well that’s just the positives I can think of right now, not that they’re not reason enough to already be signing up now and posting relevant posts with your anchored signature links.

Okay now to start our list off we have;

The name leaves much to be desired, but it is straight to the point and, you’ll not in a million years guess what it does.

Yes, so it says on it’s Wordpress Plugin page “The dofollow plugin for WordPress lets you remove the evil nofollow attribute from your comments.“. Told you that you’d never guess.

There’s something straight-to-the-point about this Plugin, so I instantly felt obliged to add this straight-to-my-list.

No follow Case by Case

Id just like to point out, I haven’t actually tested these plugins out myself. I normally just change links to NoFollow manually. Just FYI.

Anyhow, I do think this is a very handy looking little tool for your NoFollow’ing needs.

Authors Description:

• Strip nofollow from comment links, pingbacks and trackbacks (default).
• Selectively apply nofollow to any comment link you do not like to support.
• Selectively apply nofollow to any comment author link you do not like to support.
• If you like to open your comment links in a new window you can do that.

As long as you do nothing the plugin automatically strips nofollow from all your comment links and comment author links.“.

Sounds pretty good doesn’t it? Well go on, download it.. then upload it to your site, activate it, then come back. I’ll be waiting..

Ultimate Noindex Nofollow Tool

Notice how the names of each of these plugins gets longer every time?

This plugin here, on paper, appears to be a great little tool for your on-site optimization.It allows you to easily noindex any page you want, but also nofollow any link your heart desires. Pretty cool, eh?

“Add the noindex robots meta tag to archives, categories, search pages, tags, author pages, login, admin pages or any other page you choose.

Add the rel="nofollow" attribute to individual pages listed by the wp_list_pages function or the Pages widget. Also, add the rel="nofollow" attribute to archive links, category links, registration and login links.“.

If you selfishly want to defend your hard-earned PageRank, then this plugin will very likely be your BFF.
